This is a common but problematic trope in a lot of these kind of movies. It's actually a perk that not only is this guy a more healthy relationship choice but hotter as well, but even if he wasn't, the pick this guy or girl trope because the writer wants it, happens too much. However, it's not good. I mean going all the way back to 90s sitcoms, in a gender flipped version of this, Steve Urkel picking Laura over Mayra makes me mad. Laura wasn't abusive, like this "After" guy might be, but her getting together with Steve felt more like a settle than Steve picking a girl who didn't only illegit love him but found his quirks charming instead of something to change. If no one on this board knows what I'm talking about, it was a 90s sitcom called "Family Matters" and I'm old and very sad. However, my larger point, that aside, is this is a trope that even in the MeToo era refuses to die for some reason. People need to stop acting like "Twilight" invented this trope. Though, it's often not a secret sexist agenda, which a lot of people think it is. I think a writer spends so much time envisioning a relationship as the center of their work, that when in the writing process, it no longer makes sense, and even the character used as a plot device road block is thrown im because the better option, THEY STILL WANT THOSE CHARACTERS TO BE TOGETHER. It's a trope called "Creator's Pet" more than anything. The creator no matter how much it stops making sense in the writing process really wants them to be together, and damn it, IT'S GOING TO HAPPEN.
